Eddi said
“There is a beautiful traditional tune to this song and one day I shall sing it through but this version came out through reading the words and messing about with a guitar tuning. So I only sing a hint of the trad tune. I also improvised on the order of the lyrics. It came out that way and I stuck to it. The image of a lassie calling for ‘Jamie’ to come and be with her struck me as so empowering. Robert writing from a woman’s perspective.”

explanations

A tune with this title was originally published Oswald’s Curious Scots tunes (1742), but Burns may have been working from the title only, since no ‘original’ text has been discovered. Burns’s version, from the The Scots musical museum (1790 volume) is as follows :

Jamie come try me

Jamie come try me,
  Jamie come try me,
If thou would win my love
  Jamie come try me.

If thou should ask my love,
  Could I deny thee?
If thou would win my love,
  Jamie come try me.

If thou should kiss me, love,
  Wha could espy thee?
If thou wad be my love,
  Jamie, come try me.

Jamie, come try me…
