tracks
  1. Dear John   (Mark E. Nevin/Kirsty MacColl)   4:08
  2. When I watch you sleeping [demo version]   (Nevin)   3:53
  3. What you do with what you’ve got   (Si Khan)   4:37
  4. That’s fair   (Eddi Reader)   4:44
notes
each copy is numbered, in the white box on the cover, with a four-digit metal numbering machine; copies in the 3000–4000 range have been seen
although labelled ‘featuring three exclusive tracks’, two of the three are of course lifted from Eddi’s first solo album Mirmama, released two years earlier by RCA; the other exclusive track on the CD is the demo version of a track on the then current Eddi Reader album, so, ironically, the only really exclusive track on these ‘Dear John’ releases is ‘Battersea moon’, the “one exclusive track” which appears on the cassette and 7-inch versions of the single (see below)

notes
the CD promo contains the same tracks as the limited edition release but is in a standard singles’ case, with a sticker on the back stating ‘PROMOTIONAL COPY ONLY NOT FOR RESALE’; as you can confirm on the enlargement (right), the catalogue number and EAN (product barcode) on the insert differ from the release and look like those of a ‘normal’ second CD: as there wouldn’t be much point in having an unlimited release with the same tracks, one wonders why this promo doesn’t have a catalogue number NEG75CDDJ and no barcode, and also whether a companion ‘normal’ CD was originally planned
the promo cassette inlay card, reproduced right, has each track listed with a code for the format(s) on which it is scheduled to appear, except that, ironically, the MCS format isn’t listed – although its catalogue number suffix ‘C’ does appear in the ‘CAT NO.’ string; the track timings differ slightly, presumably being the length of the recording as mastered here;   CHOP EM OUT’ (a well-known mastering suite) and the WEA logos were probably pre-printed on ‘stock’ card, as they are in grey and silver-grey ink; the tape is a non-branded Chrome super II type
as usual with Eddi’s singles, the release date seems to have slipped a week in practice!
